Annas New York Guide
My 5-day itinerary - with the best tips and highlights, tested for you
Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park - most people probably have a rough idea of what the absolute must-sees in New York are. But the abundance of possible activities can quickly overwhelm you - what is really worth doing and what can you safely skip?
I'll tell you in my 5-day itinerary – because I also travelled to New York this year after the city that never sleeps had been on my travel wish list for years. I did a lot of research beforehand - and saved numerous videos on TikTok and Instagam, created Google Maps lists and added recommendations from friends.
So if you're keen to travel to the metropolis or are still considering whether the trip would be something for you, this guide is perfect for you. In keeping with our new New York Affairs collection, I'll tell you exactly what I did in 5 days, what I would definitely recommend and what I wouldn't do again - including the matching looks for every day. Get ready for take-off!
DAY 1
Bagel Shop: Start the first day with a classic American breakfast, i.e. cream cheese bagels and good coffee. Bagel Point and Liberty Bagels, for example, were delicious, but you can hardly get a bad bagel here
Central Park: Have a leisurely breakfast in the first rays of sunshine (as we were in NY in June, it was 30 degrees all week) - perfect for people-watching, cute squirrels included
Fifth Avenue: The park is located right between the Upper East Side and the Upper West Side, making it the perfect location for window shopping on one of THE shopping streets
Zitomer: Insider tip - an old-school pharmacy with a traditional interior, which now also has trendy beauty products, cute cards and the perfect New York souvenirs
Magnolia Bakery: Stop for the hyped banana pudding - in my opinion a bit overrated and very sweet, here I would rather recommend one of the many other hyped places, such as Levain Bakery or Janie's Life-Changing Baked Goods
DAY 2
IIced Matcha: the perfect way to start the day and stay cool in hot temperatures. The best shops for those who also love powdered green tea: Cha Cha Matcha, Plantshed, Matchaful, La Cabra, White Noise or Blank Street were my favourites
Metropolitan Museum of Art: the museum, also known as the Met, is familiar from various films, series (such as Gossip Girl) or the annual charity gala. The fashion exhibition I visited is now over - but there are always new, exciting exhibitions here, which you should definitely book online in advance
Chelsea Market: a marketplace in the neighbourhood of the same name with lots of small shops and shops. Here you can buy everything from fresh food to homemade jewellery
High Line: connects directly to Chelsea Market. You can walk half an hour along the elevated, former goods train terrace with a view of the streets below and then reach...
Hudson Yards: a building complex with the famous spiral staircase icon Vessel, which has already become a landmark
Burger Place: In the evening we had a real American burger, but the veggie version. I can definitely recommend the ones from Shake Shack!
DAY 3
Soho: One of the hippest neighbourhoods, a perfect mix of vintage shops and stands, cute cafés, restaurants and bookshops. Also ideal for a detour to the neighbouring districts of Greenwich Village, Little Italy and Chinatown
Le Dive: Lunch at the bistro-style restaurant, perfect view of Soho's streets, radish and fennel salad with crispy fries was a 10 out of 10
Summit One Vanderbilt: A good viewpoint is a must when travelling to New York. This one not only has the beautiful view, but also interactive installations and is also completely mirrored and glazed - the perfect photo spot for lasting memories
Parm: Back in Soho for dinner, on the famous Mulberry Street at a real classic. The portions are huge and very tasty, the aubergine gratin with spicy rotini pasta is a must-eat
Rooftop Bar on the Public Hotel: Another little insider tip - with a view of Soho and the skyline, super good drinks and even live music and DJs. Best come in time to watch the sunset
DAY 4
Brooklyn Bridge: The good thing about jet lag is that you're on the famous bridge very early so that you can enjoy the view of Manhattan undisturbed
Dumbo Flea Market: Directly behind the bridge is one of the city's most famous flea markets, which is always open at the weekend - perfect for individual vintage treasures of all kinds
Bryant Park Movie Night: Bryant Park is located directly below Central Park and is much smaller. In summer there is a romantic open-air cinema here (tip: get there early!), and in winter there is also a Christmas market with great food spots and an ice skating rink. Worth a visit either way
Times Square: Just around the corner from the park is Times Square, which is practically the centre of Broadway, the theatre district, with its numerous musicals and Broadway shows. Fun fact: It is named after the New York Times building, which is also located here
DAY 5
Broadway: It's not only impressive in the evening and when it's brightly lit, it's also worth a stroll along Broadway during the day - there are food festivals and other small markets that are well worth a visit
Statue of Liberty: With the Metro Card, you can take the ferry to Staten Island to see the Statue of Liberty up close. I only looked at it from a distance, which in my opinion is quite enough. Speaking of the metro: you can simply pay contactless by credit card whenever you want to use the metro - for $2.90 per journey and a maximum of $34 per week
New World Trade Centre: The 9/11 memorial and museum is a place of tranquillity in the midst of vibrant Manhattan - the huge pools of water mark the footprints of the former twin towers and are sure to leave a lasting impression on any visitor
Joe's Pizza: Afterwards, a slice of pizza at what is probably the most famous pizza place in the whole of New York, as evidenced by the many celebrity pictures on the walls. And then it's back to the airport.
For next time:
I would love to visit more museums, explore some of the great neighbourhoods in more detail - and especially come here in winter to enjoy the Christmas vibe.
